  • The Professional Game Of Golf

As the amateur game of golf has developed so has the professional game. The current leading professional and one of the greatest golfers of all time is Tiger Woods. The professional game is, however, split into two with the vast majority working as club or teaching professionals. The elite group which includes such famous names as Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Sam Snead are "tournament pros" who compete (or have competed) full time on international "tours". You can see the current top 20 Tour professionals towards the end of this page.

The most famous of all the golf tours is the PGA Tour which attracts the best golfers from the other twenty plus tours, who compete for the first prize of $800,000. The second ranked tour is the European Tour.

In addition to the tours, there are the four major championships, which include: The Masters, The U.S. Open, The British Open and The PGA Championship. These are the most prestigious events in men's golf and a golfers playing record in these tournaments largely determines his place in golfing history. For example, Jack Nicklaus, is widely recognised as the greatest golfer of all time with his record 18 professional major victories.
