Iron Sets
In
every golf bag, you will find an iron set.
In a standard set of irons you will find
3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 irons and the Pitching
Wedge. The pitching wedge may be included
in this group, however, you will learn more
about its importance under
Wedges.
Normally, irons are used when you are within
200 yards of the green. Irons can make or
break your golf game.
Not
every one agrees but irons are usually classified
into short irons, mid irons, and long irons.
8 irons through the pitching wedge are considered
short irons, 5 to 7 irons are considered
mid irons, and 1 to 4 irons are considered
long irons. The 1 to 4 irons have a lower
loft, the 5 to 7 are of course in the middle,
and the 8 and up have higher lofts.
You
may be wondering if you are a beginner golfer
why the loft is important. Loft is the angle
of the clubface that controls the flight
and influences the distance the golf ball
will travel. Most of the time lofts for
irons range in the vicinity of 16% to 48%.
Today, most irons have lower lofts than
you saw a few years back. The reason being
is that even an average golfer had the desire
to hit the ball just like professional golfers.
Irons
1 through 7 are normally used for approaching
the green and some people even prefer using
them to tee off instead of a driver. Just
remember, if you are not within 200 yards
of the green you will more than likely not
reach the green with an iron. The short
irons along with the wedges are normally
used for pitching or chipping the ball onto
the fairway or green or getting out of sand
traps.
Using
the proper irons for your own style and
size is very important. The iron should
fit your body so to speak. If you cannot
stand properly and swing the iron to hit
the ball correctly, then your golf game
is not going to be its best and even the
type of material that the iron clubhead
and shaft are made with play an important
role in your golf game. Beginner irons are
normally made from zinc, the better irons
are considered 431 stainless steel and the
best irons are tungsten insert, bi-metal,
and 17-4ph stainless steel.
