  • Golf - The Game Explained

Before you can play any game successfully you need to know what the game is, where it has come from, how it has evolved, what its rules are, what its aim is, plus the equipment that you can use to meet that aim. Golf is no different and this section is a complete induction to the what, why and how of Golf. If after reading you have any further questions then please feel free to contact us. In our writing we have included other websites that provide more depth and information where relevant...we hope you find them useful.

    The History Of Golf
The name "Golf" did not arise until the 15th century but many countries lay claim to the origin of the sport well before this time. Such countries include England, China, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and perhaps with most agreement Scotland.

The Golfers Arena - The Golf Course
The golf course is more than a stretch of open land that has had 18 holes carved into it - it is an arena in which golfers compete with themselves, each other and ultimately the particular hole they are playing with the sole aim of attaining their lowest score.

    The Rules of Golf
The first set of documented rules were drawn up nearly 300 years ago by The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers in 1744. They had been created to govern the annual competition between golfers from any part of Great Britain and Ireland that existed at the time and totaled 13 in number.

    Golf Etiquette
In addition to the official rules of golf as determined by the two leading bodies, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A) and the United States Golf Association (USGA), there is also another set of "rules" or more appropriately customs which aim to impact upon the way golf is played.

    The Handicap Explained
The handicap system is used only in amateur golf. As professional golfers score several strokes below par for a round such a system has no meaning in the professional game.

    An Introduction To Golf Equipment
Nike Golf recently created a program called "Equipping a Tiger" which explored their sponsorship deal with professional golfer Tiger Woods and how they have sought to equip him with the best equipment to compete at the highest level in golf.

    The Professional Game
As the amateur game of golf has developed so has the professional game. The current leading professional and one of the greatest golfers of all time is Tiger Woods.
